Buckingham Palace announced in February that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer.

Although the condition was identified during an operation that treated the British monarch’s benign prostate enlargement, Bazaar understands that Charles does not have prostate cancer. The palace has yet to confirm the specific diagnosis.

“The king is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” the palace said in a statement. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

The statement continued: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The monarch was discharged from a London hospital in late January after undergoing surgery for an enlarged prostate. At the time, he candidly shared news of his condition with the public, to encourage others with similar symptoms to get checked themselves.

After the king was released, the palace said in another statement: “His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”

Months after the announcement, Princess Kate revealed that she had also been diagnosed with cancer. The condition, which has not yet been specified, was discovered following tests after an abdominal surgery that she underwent in January.

Charles and Queen Camilla offered their support to Kate following the news. “His Majesty is ‘so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did,’” a palace spokesperson told Bazaar. “Following their time in hospital together, [His Majesty] has ‘remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.’”
