KIMBERLÉ CRENSHAW: Even though MeToo started to raise awareness of the fact that Black women and girls also experience sexual abuse, it wasn't immediately clear that that understanding was going to become part of the viral dimension of the MeToo campaign. And early on, it wasn't. It really took the effort of [? Toronto ?] [? Berk ?] and others to insist that women of color also had a piece of this moment.

It took decades. But it's finally happened. And I hope that in this happening, number one, Black women and girls and other women of color understand that their issues do not fall outside of the community. They are not issues that are peripheral to social justice. And they can speak in an environment and in a community that's willing to listen to them and hold up their demands for justice.
