Kim Petras made history at the 2023 Grammys.
Winning the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for TikTok sensation track "Unholy" with Sam Smith, Petras delivered a moving speech to mark the occasion—at Smith's insistence.

"Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I'm the first transgender woman to win this award," she said as Smith encouraged the auditorium to give her a standing ovation.
Petras thanked other transgender artists, singling out the late Sophie for encouraging her throughout her career.

“Sophie, my friend who passed away two years ago. Thank you so much for your inspiration," Petras said. "I adore you and your inspiration will always be in my music.”
She also thanked Madonna "for fighting for LGBTQ rights," adding, "I don't think I could be here without Madonna."
Petras was also the first woman to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Unholy."
