Kim Kardashian West Revives the Lace-Up Fly

I’m tired of ubiquitous classic zipper flies, and I'm exhausted from all of those vintage-inspired button-up flies, too—what I really want to see is something saucy when it comes to fastening pants. The time is right, then, for the return of the lace-up fly: and, as usual, Kim Kardashian West is the first to kickstart the trend. Yesterday afternoon, the reality star stepped out in sun-drenched Calabasas wearing a paper-thin Lurex cardigan and a pair of black, skintight leather flared pants, featuring a fly that was reminiscent of corset lacing. Finally, to round out the slick look, Kardashian West opted for a pair of pointy-toe silver heels.

While the outfit is relatively minimalist, the subversive, can’t-miss-it addition of the lace-up fly gives it a jolt of something sexier. The feature, of course, had a huge moment in the ’00s: Think Christina Aguilera during her transformation into the oiled-up, flesh-baring vixen of her Stripped era, popping her hips in a pair of lace-up, can’t-peel-’em-off red leather pants. We might see Kardashian West heading towards this more maximalist style moment more regularly, too. Just last week she appeared in snakeskin print pants that were reminiscent of brash and bold Y2K Roberto Cavalli garb. Sure, it's a lot to unpack—or rather, unlace—but the lace-up fly is a detail that lends any look a perfect dose of subversive bite.
