Kim Kardashian West’s “Life in Looks” Includes Juicy Couture, Kanye West, and a Whole Lot of Skims

Kim Kardashian West’s life has truly been a life of looks. The reality star turned mogul and her ever-transforming wardrobe have been in the public eye for well over a decade. (As a reminder, Keeping Up With the Kardashians first began filming in 2007.) And in her new video for Vogue’s Life in Looks series, we learn that Kardashian West is candid when it comes to the many phases of her style, some of which she considers regrettable. “Today, I’m going to be going through some of my most iconic looks, some of my most tragic looks,” she says as she opens up her tome filled with images from yesteryear, along with some more current outfits.

While it was the reality-television show Keeping Up With the Kardashians that truly put Kardashian West on the map, she actually began her life in the public eye as Paris Hilton’s sidekick and closet organizer, making multiple cameos on Hilton’s own reality show, The Simple Life. Kardashian West points this out in an eye-popping image taken of the two at the height of the ’00s: Back in 2006, they were captured shopping in Sydney, Australia, with their navels exposed, hauling two oversized metallic Louis Vuitton bags. (Paris holds a gold one; Kim, a silver one, which she admits that she still has.) Fun fact: Kardashian West dishes on Hilton’s organizational skills, noting that the heiress “Does not take care of her purses!” adding, “It’s like a pharmacy in there.”

Of the more recent looks, Kardashian West speaks about the first Met Gala that she attended as her now husband Kanye West’s guest in 2013. At the time, a pregnant Kim wore a stretchy Givenchy floral-print dress by Riccardo Tisci, which ended up becoming one of the most-memed ensembles of that year. “I remember the Olsen twins came up to me and loved my outfit and my gloves, so none of the critics mattered,” she says. There was also her first Vogue cover with West from 2014. “Alber Elbaz [of Lanvin] gave me the dress, and I still have it in my archive,” she says of the cover look.

It’s also undeniable that Kardashian West is a force in fashion, and has a knack for wearing trends before they become, well, trends. “I remember everyone made fun of me for these bike shorts,” she says of a puffer coat and bike shorts combo from June 2018. “Then, of course, everyone was wearing it two years later.” She credits West for some of her most memorable fashion moments, including her earthy-hued Yeezy getup from the guerilla-style paparazzi Yeezy lookbook shoot from 2016. “I always trust his vision. I think he sees years ahead,” she says. “My best looks are the ones that he puts together.”

But it isn’t all about looks for Kardashian West. Some of her clingier numbers were a catalyst for her empire of shapewear, Skims. In particular, it was a Tom Ford–era Gucci suit that Kardashian West wore without a shirt (or bra!) to LACMA’s Art+Film Gala back in 2017. “This was the classic example of why I invented Skims body tape!” she says. “This was probably black packing tape, or gaffer tape. I didn’t tape it to me, I just taped my boobs up and figured I’d be very careful.” Talk about a look for the books.
