Kiernan Shipka on Sabrina and Harvey's Fate in "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"

When Netflix unveiled a special holiday episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, aptly named A Midwinter’s Tale, fans understandably lost their festive minds. From pointing out its subtle references to other yuletide stories to tweeting out their love for the show’s witchy take on the holiday season, the special has quickly become a must-watch.

Yet there’s one thing about A Midwinter’s Tale that’s leaving watchers bereft of Solstice cheer: Its melancholy ending seems to depict Sabrina’s relationship with Harvey as over – for good. Even Sabrina herself is crushed. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kiernan Shipka explained that she was “obviously heartbroken” when she first learned of the young lovebirds’ fate.

“I’m a Harbrina shipper as much as anyone else, ya know? But it’s heartbreaking, it totally is,” she said. “I loved them.”

In the episode, Sabrina and Harvey, who recently broke up, are left uncertain of where they stand. When our whimsical protagonist tries to offer her ex a peace offering — a gift of magical colored pencils and an enchanted eggnog — Harvey refuses to accept. The encounter appears to steer their once happy relationship toward an indefinite end.

“I think that they’re wonderful and even if they do eventually end up getting back together, nothing will be like Harvey and Sabrina season one,” Kiernan added. “Like, RIP that. Because truly that was such a special, innocent, young love thing and that is a thing of the past. That will never happen again. They’ve both seen too much and done too much at this point.”

But according to Kiernan, Sabrina and Harvey will remain in each other’s lives. In the interview, she teased ET with details of CAOS’s future: “In the next part of season one, we see [Sabrina and Harvey] coming into their own and finding themselves in new ways. In ways that separate them more and bring them back together more — it’s a bit of a back and forth."

A heartbreaking end to Harbrina may not be the gift we wanted this year, but at least we know that even Kiernan can relate.
