Kiernan Shipka Doesn’t ‘Get Along With’ the Cat Playing Salem in ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’

Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a dramatic take on the iconic teenage witch story, and according to star Kiernan Shipka, some of the drama found its way off-screen, too — with one of her four-legged costars, that is.

“The cat is the one cast member I don’t get along with,” Shipka, who stars as Sabrina, recently told Vulture. The actress revealed that there are five furry felines portraying Sabrina’s iconic pet cat Salem, and she found out the hard way that she was allergic to one of them when she picked it up and broke out in hives.

Early photos from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina have yet to give us a glimpse at Salem. Although the sassy talking black cat was a fixture of the beloved Melissa Joan Hart-starring ABC series from the ’90s, the new Netflix adaptation has been described as “a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and, of course, witchcraft,” and it’s yet to be seen whether the cat will take on the same role.

Other characters that will be portrayed in the upcoming supernatural series include Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis), Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto), and Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle). Abigail Cowan, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle are also set to star.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will premiere on Netflix just in time for Halloween on Friday, October 26.
