But first things first: why are we talking about masking again? According to CDC data, COVID-19 hospitalizations have been increasing since mid-July, with almost four new hospital admissions nationwide for every 100,000 people in the week of August 6 to 12. The CDC classifies that as a “low” hospitalization level, but it’s still the highest it’s been since April, and with schools starting up and colder weather on the way, it’s not a bad idea to consider masking your kids up.

“We are seeing an increase in COVID cases, and in general the overall percentage of testing at home is low, so there may be even more COVID cases than we know about, especially since the vast majority of kids have no or mild symptoms,” says pediatrician Sara Bode, MD, the medical director of school-based health and mobile clinics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, in an interview with CNN. While Dr. Bode said that widespread masking for kids isn’t yet necessary, she recommended speaking to a doctor about masking if your child has a health condition that impacts their ability to fight off infections.

In addition, poor air quality still continues to impact areas of the country following a wildfire season that left areas of the Northeast and northern Midwest swathed in smoke. According to the CDC, children can be even more affected by smoky air, since their lungs are still developing as they grow. Kids with asthma or other respiratory health issues could be at greater risk of difficulty breathing. When air quality is poor, the CDC recommends kids switching to indoor play and wearing N95-level masks to keep airways clear from the smoke.

Of course, with masks on our minds again, we’re remembering that one of the greatest challenges of the pandemic has been finding the perfect masks to fit everyone in your family. You want something that gets more than one use (for sustainability’s sake) but that won’t feel like a huge loss if your kid loses it or leaves it in a pocket heading into the wash. For safety’s sake, you want something that has the appropriate amount of layers and a protective seal. And in the case of your kids especially, you want something that isn’t too complicated to wrestle on to tiny faces when you go out.

Luckily, the adult-friendly and celeb-approved evolvetogether masks (worn by the likes of Katie Holmes, Jennifer Garner, and Olivia Wilde) have a kids-sized version, and they are in stock and ready to add to cart right now.

If you held off on replenishing your mask supply this summer, keep reading about the evolvetogether KN95 mask for kids so you can stock up as COVID cases rise.

A bit about the mask: Referred to as an “upgraded” KN95 that’s designed for “crowded indoor spaces, increased air pollution, and intense allergies,” it’s made with 6-ply technology, double filtration, water-repellent outer fabric (great for wet gross winter and spring weather!), and odor-reducing activated charcoal. It’s a sleek answer to an everyday mask that won’t make your kids feel overwhelmed but will keep them safe. (As a reminder, KN95 masks are similar to N95s; the main differences are that KN95s have ear loops and are made to meet Chinese standards for medical masks, while N95s meet American standards, per the New York Times.)

The bendable bridge at the nose and the comfortable ear loops of the evolvetogether mask help keep it comfortable and maintain the seal that experts are always emphasizing when talking mask selection. And reviewers love the evolvetogether masks; one called them “the perfect solution for smaller faces,” while another described them as “the best masks I have found for my child. They fit really well, stay put and don’t hurt her ears or her nose.”

These masks also clock in at $14.95 USD for a pack of five, which doesn’t come out to be too stressful of a price for the quality of mask you’re getting. Jump on these sooner than later so your kids are protected as school starts up again.
