Kicking Horse Scores 140cm+ Storm Total

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, in Golden, BC, with the 5th largest vertical in North America, saw large snowfall totals from the latest storm.

The resort's new snowfall comes in at 12 cm (4.7 in) in the last 24 hours, 17 cm (6.7 in) in the last two days, and an impressive 114 cm (44.9 in) over the past week.

With 493 cm (194 in) this season, the mountain is now reporting snow conditions of powder on the upper and lower mountain.

Kicking Horse's Snow Report reminds skiers that due to all of the new snow, alpine terrain will be limited due to avalanche control needing to be completed.

However, this is something of an upside, as fresh tracks will be available intermittently instead of all at once.

As of March 3rd, Super Bowl's T1 South is open, with T2 remaining closed, CPR Ridge South at Bowl Over is open, Crystal Bowl is fully open, and Redemption Ridge North and Middle Ridge South in Feuz Bowl is open, with Rudi's Bowl fully closed.

Besides requiring additional avalanche control work to be done, the storm total has also increased the tree well hazard. The resort urges everyone to ski with a friend, and obey all signage and closures at the risk of losing your lift ticket or season pass if you do not.

With this much caution advocated from Kicking Horse officials, perhaps it is also a good time to bring your own safety gear, such as a beacon, probe, shovel, and whistle, even if you are planning on skiing strictly inbounds.

This much snow, while riskier than low-tide conditions in terms of burying and avalanche related dangers, promises to provide a thrilling experience for skiers at Kicking Horse this week.

POWDER's Ian Greenwood attended Kicking Horse's stop of the Freeride World Tour just two weeks ago, reporting on the event with words and moodily-lit photographs documenting the action.

The competitors, who travelled from all over the world to attend the contest, skied in deceptively difficult conditions to battle it out before the upcoming tour cut.

Things are looking much different at the resort these days--it is crazy how drastically a mountain's lines and snowpack can change in two weeks.
