Last summer, Khloé Kardashian and her ex-boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, welcomed their second child via surrogate.

The baby boy, who is named Tatum, was born amid a tumultuous time in Khloé and Tristan's relationship.

To recap, Khloé and Tristan first started dating in 2016, and welcomed their first child, True, in 2018. Their on-again, off-again relationship has repeatedly been dogged by the NBA player’s cheating scandals over the years.

Fast forward to the fall of 2021, and the pair had secretly rekindled their relationship and gotten engaged. This was all made public when Season 1 of Hulu’s The Kardashians aired last year.

What’s more, Khloé and Tristan decided to have a second child via surrogate. However, just days after their embryo was transferred, Tristan’s shocking paternity scandal was exposed.

It turned out that Tristan had secretly impregnated another woman, Maralee Nichols, outside of his and Khloé’s relationship. He initially denied that the baby was his, though ultimately admitted that he was in fact the father of Maralee’s son after taking a DNA test.

As expected, Khloé was left absolutely distraught by the paternity scandal. “I’m not sure that there is one thing that hurts more than the other,” she said in an episode of The Kardashians. “Everything is an act of betrayal, everything is a lie, everything is manipulation. It’s deceit.”

“Did Tristan have every opportunity to tell me? Yes,” she continued. “Was Tristan going to tell me if there wasn’t a baby involved? Absolutely not, and that shows a lot about his character. The entire thing is despicable.”

Then, the Season 2 finale of The Kardashians ended with Khloé and her sister Kim rushing to the hospital after Khloé’s surrogate went into labor early.

Khloé appeared to be in a state of shock throughout the scene, even remaining uncharacteristically quiet when her family visited later to meet the little boy at her home.

Well now, Season 3 of the Hulu show has dropped, and we’ve learned a bunch of new details about how Khloé was coping in the wake of her son’s birth.

In the premiere episode, which aired on Thursday, Khloé sat down for a candid chat about her surrogacy experience with Scott Disick and Kim, who also welcomed her third and fourth children via surrogates after suffering a series of health complications.

“A surrogate process, Kim knows, it’s really hard for me,” Khloé says. Kim nods in agreement, adding that Khloé “had a really hard time accepting the whole process.”

“It’s a mind fuck,” Khloé continues. “It’s really the worst thing.”

Kim goes on to describe the difference she found between carrying a baby herself and having a surrogate.

“I do think that there’s a difference when the baby is in your belly,” she says. “The baby actually feels your real heart — think about it.”

“It touches your [organs], like, there’s no one else on this planet that will feel you from the inside like that — like, your heart,” she says.

“People can connect in different ways,” she later adds.

At this point, Scott then outright asks Khloé if she feels “less connected” to her baby boy than she did when she welcomed True.

“So, do you feel less connected?” he asks. “Mmhmm,” she replies in agreement.

After Scott reassures her that it’ll “take a minute” before she does feel connected to her son, Khloé says, “Kim said hers was easy. This is not easy.”

And going on to elaborate in a confessional, Khloé admits that she buried her “head in the sand” while her surrogate was carrying the little boy.

“I didn’t digest what was happening,” she continues. “So I think when I went to the hospital, I really think that was the first time that it really registered.”

“It has nothing to do with the baby,” she explains. “It’s just, you’re like, ‘OK, we’re having a baby!’ And this is my son and I’m taking him home with me.”

Khloé then reveals that she was in fact in a “state of shock” while the baby was being born, before admitting that she felt “really guilty” when she had to take the little boy from the surrogate.

“I definitely was in a state of shock — I think from my entire experience in general,” she says.

“I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby, and I take the baby, and then I go to another room and you’re sorta separated,” she continues. “It’s such a transactional experience.”

Ultimately, Khloé says she wishes someone had been “honest” about how “different” surrogacy is from birthing a baby yourself.

“I wish someone was honest about surrogacy and the difference of it,” she says. “It doesn’t mean it’s bad or good — it’s still great, it’s just very different.”
