And coming for Popeyes in the process.

Each year, when Thanksgiving rolls around, many home cooks set out to go where no bird has gone before: the deep fryer. As great as that idea may be, it can lead to some quite dangerous places; each year the practice results in death, injuries and an estimated $15 million in property damage. In fact, the National Fire Protection Agency and other fire protection agencies advise home cooks to avoid deep frying turkeys altogether. If you do choose to go that route, please do so with the right tools and the right preparation.

If you don't want to go through the trouble (and risk) of deep frying your bird this Thanksgiving, we've got great news. KFC, with its signature 11 herbs and spices, is bringing back a Thanksgiving favorite: its Cajun Deep Fried Turkey.

KFC Is Bringing Back Its Cajun Deep Fried Turkey

Cajun Turkey wars are the new chicken sandwich wars. KFC is pitting its Thanksgiving offerings against Popeyes' once again, officially announcing the return of its Cajun Deep Fried Turkey for 2023.

Seasoned with Cajun seasonings and deep fried to juicy perfection, KFC's Cajun Deep Fried Turkey comes fully cooked—all you have to do is reheat it to 165 degrees F. It can be preordered from now until Thanksgiving, and picked up at participating KFC locations (they'll even be open on Thanksgiving until 4 p.m.).

The turkey can be purchased a la carte for $70 or as part of a KFC's Holiday Meal for $100, or in a Holiday Feast for $110. The Holiday Meal comes with a Cajun Deep Fried Turkey, family size mash potatoes, family size gravy, family size creamy coleslaw, and one dozen buttermilk biscuits.

The Holiday Feast comes with a Cajun Deep Fried Turkey, family sized mash potatoes, family size gravy, family size sweet corn, family size mac & cheese, family size chocolate cake, and one dozen buttermilk biscuits.

So how does KFC's turkey stack up against Popeyes Cajun Style Turkey? Popeye's turkey costs a bit more ($99 including shipping) and comes frozen, so you still have to thaw and reheat it before digging in. But here's the real big difference. As of now, KFC is only offering its Cajun Deep Fried Turkey in four states: California, Colorado, Utah and Washington. And, unlike Popeyes, KFC does do not ship—you can get your Popeyes turkey delivered right to your door or pick one up from your nearest Popeyes location. So Popeyes certainly has KFC beat on accessibility (for now at least).

But, if you do have a KFC that's selling the Cajun Deep Fried Turkey this year, consider yourself lucky. You can avoid a particularly precarious poultry process and skip straight to the good part. Or, even if you opt to make your own turkey, you can still savor KFC's signature flavor on Thanksgiving by whipping up a batch of Copycat KFC Gravy.
