KFC’s New Menu Item Is ‘Unhealthy’ But Customers Couldn’t Care Less

After a ten-year hiatus, KFC has brought back a once-hyped sandwich: the Double Down. It’s hard to even call it a sandwich—buns are replaced with two fried chicken patties. Between the chicken cuts lies the “doubles” part: double the cheese and double the smoked bacon, smothered in mayo or spicy sauce. Since launching the menu item once again, fans are flocking to the Internet to discuss the return of this outrageous monster. Here’s the latest:

Fans React To KFC's Re-Launched Double Down Chicken Sandwich

The Double Down launched for a limited time a month ago, but it didn't take long for KFC fans to slather their hands with double the grease once again. A Redditor published a review of the sandwich that read: "I enjoyed KFC's Double Down a good bit this time around." KFC debuted the Double Down in 2010 and claims they sold 10 million sandwiches in the first month due to its hype. They brought it back briefly in 2014, and it was back again this March in 2023.

The review continued, "besides the slightly clunky eating experience from trying to cram two stacked chicken filets into my mouth, it really does just feel like eating meaty, boneless fried chicken with some melted cheese and bacon, which is not a bad thing at all."

Fans piled on with comments after the review was posted. "This is seriously amazing. The cheese, the bacon, the grease," one wrote. "Worth the trip to the hospital." (Yikes—we're not sure about that.)

Another replied that this was a "10/10" and that "If it weren’t dieting, I think I’d be eating this multiple times a week."

One person chimed in, "This sandwich is incredible. Truly a marvel of fast food. I’ve eaten two each day since Monday." To which a user replied, "RIP this man’s arteries."

While commenters tore the sandwich up for being "unhealthy," some questioned if it was really any worse than other menu items served by the chain. "I never understood why this is considered so much more unhealthy than a regular chicken sandwich with bacon," wrote one reply.

According to the menu, the KFC Double Down is a whopping 930-950 calories. In comparison, A KFC Chicken Sandwich runs between 620-650 calories, and a KFC Bacon, Cheese, and Chicken Sandwich will have you eating about 770 calories. The Double Down is significantly more, which makes sense since there is literally double everything on the sandwich, which some fans don't realize. Double chicken, yes, but also double bacon and cheese.

If you are looking to get your hands on this bun-free sandwich, you might be out of luck. KFC said the sandwich would only be available for four weeks after March 6. Some may say they're trying to prevent too many hospital visits, but judging by the 10 million orders sold in 2010, it's safe to say assume they would have already crossed that threshold.

Here's to hoping we see the Double Down again soon... and that it doesn't send anyone into cardiac arrest.
