Kevin Spacey Dropped from Getty Kidnapping Film
Amid multiple allegations of sexual assault, Kevin Spacey has been dropped from All the Money in the World, a Ridley Scott film about John Paul Getty III's kidnapping. Spacey was going to play oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, who famously refused to pay his 16-year-old grandson's ransom. He had already completed filming.
Per Deadline, Christopher Plummer will replace Spacey in the role, and the reshoots are reportedly starting immediately; however, Plummer said he wasn't"replacing" Spacey, but rather the film was "starting all over again" with the role.
"It isn't replacing," he told ET. "In a funny way it's starting all over again because it's going to be different, naturally."
Of the circumstances that led to his being cast, Plummer said, "The situation is very sad, because he’s such a talented guy. The whole circumstance is sad."
"But I’ve got to forget that and go and do it, because it’s a very well written script and Ridley has been very good."
It's not surprising that Scott along with Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas have opted to distance themselves from Spacey at this time; however, it is notable that the director is still "determined to keep the film's December 22 release date."
Deadline also reports that "in a unified front, the cast and crew of the film, and Sony Pictures, unanimously agreed to reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes, with Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams’ cooperation part of the mix."
John Paul Getty III went missing in 1973. The film centers around his kidnapping, and his mother's distraught attempts to bring him home.
