Kendall Jenner’s Makeup Artist Mary Phillips Swears By This Genius Foundation-Refreshing Technique

This is such a clever way to use moisturizer.

Although certain modeling gigs and red-carpet events call for bold makeup, Kendall Jenner is mostly known for wearing a more pared-down look, especially in comparison to her sisters' all-out approach to makeup. To each their own, of course — both makeup styles are completely legit — but it's hard not to look at a photo of Jenner and covetously wonder how her makeup always looks so fresh. Well, it turns out it has a lot to do with moisturizer — but not in the way you may think.

Jenner's go-to makeup artist, Mary Phillips, always starts off Jenner's makeup with a great moisturizer, of course, but it's what she does with it later in the day that makes for a nifty makeup-refreshing hack.

"I take some moisturizer, put it on the back of my hand, use a fluffy brush and buff the skin with it," Phillips told Refinery29. You might think that sounds like it would eff up what's left of your foundation, but quite the opposite is true. "It’s basically like a Magic Eraser and rehydrates makeup without completely removing anything." The newly hydrated mix of foundation and moisturizer already looks better, but it also serves as a perfect midday primer if you want to apply additional foundation or powder.

That's not the only brilliant way Phillips incorporates moisturizer in Jenner's makeup looks. Not a fan of super-obvious highlighter, Phillips prefers face cream over shimmery powders or glittery sticks. "The whole point of highlighter is getting that pop of shine, not a stripe. You don’t really want to see the highlighter, more a glow from within," she told Refinery29, explaining that she dabs a little bit of moisturizer on the same areas highlighter would go, like the cheekbones and the center of the nose.

Phillips says she uses Creme de La Mer on Jenner — it's a family favorite, after all. But don't worry — you definitely don't need an expensive moisturizer to incorporate these tricks into your makeup routine. Try it with whichever cream or lotion is currently in your routine and prepare for your mind to be blown.
