Kelsey Grammer Revealed the Real Reason David Hyde Pierce Isn't Returning for the 'Frasier' Reboot

It's been more than 20 years since a new episode has been released, but popular sitcom Frasier still has an army of loyal fans that have been begging for a reboot. Originally created as a spin-off of Cheers, the series boasts 11 seasons and a total of 264 episodes, all of which currently stream on Paramount+. Frasier Crane ties the record for the longest running character on TV of all time. Finally, fans' demands have been answered as Paramount+ picked up a Frasier reboot by the same name (a spin-off of the spin-off, if you will). Though, all these years later the continuation of the series is bound to be a little different than the original. Frasier will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ beginning with two episodes on October 12. New episodes will drop weekly on Thursdays, culminating in a 10-episode season. Some episodes will also air on CBS.

Is David Hyde Pierce reprising Niles?

Of course, Kelsey Grammer is returning as Frasier Crane (as well as serving as one of three executive producers), but what other familiar faces can you expect to see in 2023? Many fans are already disappointed by the news that David Hyde Pierce will not be returning as Niles. "David basically decided he wasn't really interested in repeating the performance of Niles," Grammer told People. With no Niles, there will also be no Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves) as it just doesn't make sense for her to return without her on-screen husband. John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane, passed away in 2018. The series will pay tribute to his character.

Who's returning from the original cast of 'Frasier'?

Characters who will be returning include: Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle and Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier's ex-wife, Lilith. The pair will guest star but not be series regulars. The series focuses on Fraiser's new life in Boston, after moving away from Seattle, so it only makes sense to have a fresh new cast. Characters unique to the reboot include: Jack Cutmore-Scoot as Frasier's son Freddy, Nicholas Lyndhurst as Alan, Tons Olagundoye as the head of the psychology department Olivia, Jess Salgueiro as Freddy's roommate Eve, and Anders Keith as Frasier's nephew David. Though, technically David, Niles and Daphne's son, is a returner as he made an appearance as a baby in the original series, but a new actor will portray the character.

Frasier will get up to his usual antics in Boston while trying to mend his relationship with his estranged son Freddy. Reboots are always a bit risky, so it is to be determined whether this one will be a success for Paramount.
