Kelly Ripa talks about the time she and Mark Consuelos broke up
Twenty-two years in, Kelly Ripa’s marriage to Mark Consuelos appears pretty perfect, but it almost didn’t happen at all.
“Right before we got married, we broke up,” Ripa revealed on the Comments by Celebs podcast. “We broke up and we got back together the day before we went off and eloped.”
The Live With Kelly and Ryan host and the Riverdale star coupled up after working together — and pretending to be in love — on the now defunct soap All My Children in the mid-’90s. Then their act became the real thing.
“He popped the question the day before we got married, but that day, that very day that we got back together, we were at a taping of Regis and Kathie Lee, Ripa said of the show that became the one she now co-hosts with Ryan Seacrest. “It was their Mother’s Day special. They were pretaping it, and one of the dreams of one of the mothers was to meet Mark and me. We were her favorite characters on All My Children. She wanted to meet us, and I think we drove out a new car or pushed out a new pool table or something. She got a present from her kids, and we brought it out to her… It all is so connected.”
In fact, Ripa reportedly said in a video broadcast on an August 2016 episode of the show that the two weren’t speaking when they appeared on the program together. But that soon changed.
“We went for a walk in the park. I convinced her to come back to my apartment,” Consuelos said. “We had pizza and wine, and I asked her to marry me.”
Ripa was skeptical at first.
“And I said, ‘Ask me when you’re serious.’ And he said, ‘I am serious. Let’s go to Vegas tomorrow and get married.’ I said yes.”
They married on May 1, 1996. In June 1997, they welcomed their first child, son Michael, who’s now 21. Daughter Lola, now 17, and son Joaquin, now 15, followed.
Ripa and Consuelos marked their 22nd anniversary in May with lovey-dovey notes to each other.
