Kelly Ripa, 51, Says She Agrees With Cher and Won’t Go Gray Any Time Soon: "I Need to Dye My Hair"
  • Kelly Ripa, 51, explained why she doesn’t want to go gray.

  • “I think certain people look great with their gray hair,” she said. “I think it depends on the person. I really do.”

  • Ripa’s comments come in response to Cher recently revealing that she won’t be joining the gray hair trend.

Live! with Kelly and Ryan has returned to remote filming, which means Kelly Ripa’s #RootWatch is back—well, kind of. The co-host, 51, previously detailed her gray root progression on Instagram at the height of lockdown, often using root spray and eyeshadow to camouflage them for filming. Now, she's back to old habits due to the surge in COVID-19 cases—but she promises you won’t catch her going gray any time soon.

Ripa found herself inspired by Cher’s recent comments on the gray hair trend. (The pop legend said it was “fine for other girls,” but she’s “just not doing it!”)

“Cher was saying that gray hair is not for her. She is not caving in, she doesn't care about the trend—you know, celebrities are embracing their gray hair all over the place. Everybody’s embracing their gray hair,” Ripa explained on the January 7 episode of Live!. (See: Andie MacDowell, Jane Fonda, and Sharon Osbourne among those spearheading the natural trend.)

“I need to dye my hair,” she continued, agreeing with Cher that others should totally embrace salt-and-pepper strands if they want to. “I think certain people look great with their gray hair,” she said. “I think it depends on the person. I really do.”

The mom of three admitted to attempting to cover some grays that morning, adding that she even tried to rock them off-camera at the beginning of the pandemic.

“I had embraced my gray hair privately while publicly I was using brown eyeshadow to paint my roots some shade that wasn’t Santa Clause white,” she said. While shaking her head with sarcasm, she added: “But in real life, I go, ‘Oh, I look great with gray hair, you can barely tell.’”

Using root spray and eyeshadow aren’t the only hair hacks she learned during quarantine, either. Ripa also used clips to keep the unruly gray strands in place. “Gray hair has a different texture,” she said at the time. “Anyone with gray hair can tell you, it’s very wired. It tends to stand up.”

She shared the trick after forgetting to take the clips out before filming her live show—and it definitely worked, because her co-host Ryan Seacrest couldn't tell a difference. “It looks blonde to me,” he said. “That’s good. That’s excellent," Ripa replied. “It’s all part of my sinister plan to fool you.”

According to Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos, she’s actually been gray for a long time—and he has always loved it. “Since I met you, you told me that you’re gray,” he said while filling in for Seacrest in April 2020. “And I gotta tell you, I see you in the morning and I think it looks beautiful. I like it. I’m looking forward to when it’s just completely gray.”

Sorry Mark, looks like you'll be waiting a while for that!
