For weeks now, The Voice coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, John Legend and Nick Jonas have thoughtfully listened to the blind auditions and competed against each other to build their teams. But last Monday, the battles kicked off and, surprisingly, Kelly was nowhere to be found. Here's what we know about Kelly's absence on the hit NBC show.

Where is Kelly Clarkson on The Voice?

On March 22, shortly after The Voice wrapped up blind auditions, Kelly posted a short clip on Instagram teasing the news that her seat would be temporarily filled by a guest coach. “Where’s Kelly?” John asks Blake and Nick in the video. Meanwhile, Kelly can be heard on a phone call saying, “Thank you so much for doing this for me.” But who was Kelly speaking with? Well, it was none other than country music star Kelsea Ballerini.

The Tennessee native is sitting in for Kelly during the battle rounds. According to host Carson Daly, Kelly was under the weather and had to miss a few show tapings.

“Unfortunately, our own Kelly Clarkson was not feeling well this week,” he says at the beginning of the upcoming episode. “Kelly is staying at home but she’s watching the battles remotely, and we were very lucky enough to get her good friend and our good friend, [Kelsea Ballerini].”

On social media, Kelsea gave some insight about what it was like temporarily joining the rest of The Voice coaches.

“When @kellyclarkson calls and asks you to keep her seat warm, you put all those years of being her super fan to work,” she wrote alongside a promo video. “Thank you @johnlegend @nickjonas and ole pops @blakeshelton 😂 for making me feel like part of the @nbcthevoice family. I’m forever #teamkelly...see y’all at the battle rounds!”

On Instagram, Kelly posted yet another clip of The Voice and confirmed that she wasn't feeling very well when the battle round episodes were filmed. That said, she made it clear that she really appreciated Kelsea’s help in the meantime.

“Thank you so much @KelseaBallerini for sitting in for me while I was feeling under the weather!” she wrote. “I know my team is in great hands with you!! Y'all aren't going to want to miss this!! The battles start next week on @NBCTheVoice!”

In the comments section, Kelsea replied: “BIGGEST HONOR EVER and you know I got you.”

When is Kelly returning to The Voice?

While there’s been no official word of when Kelly will return, she'll likely come back in "several weeks," according to GoldDerby.com. Based on previous seasons, the battle rounds can last anywhere from three to five episodes. Given that Carson mentioned that Kelsea was “sitting in for Kelly during the battles,” it may be correct to assume that Kelly will be out for at least this week and possibly next. We’ll be on the lookout for a potential date for Kelly’s return on The Voice and update this post when we know more.
