Kelly Clarkson is giving fans some insight into her conversations with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock about the explosive breakup album she wrote in the wake of their messy divorce.

The singer, 41, who released her new album Chemistry this week, hasn't been shy to talk about her inspo for the new record, which she has admitted was largely influenced by her breakup with Blackstock, 46.

While doing some promo ahead of the album's release on Friday, June 23, Clarkson appeared on Thursday's episode of the Today show, where she shared some details from her brief chat with Blackstock about the impending breakup album, which we now know is full of brutally honest lyrics about the downfall of her relationship.

"We did have a little text exchange about it," she admitted to Today's Hoda Kotb and Carson Daly. "I don’t even remember why or how it happened, but I was like, 'Hey, I didn’t just diminish us down to one (thing).' You know what I’m saying? It’s all in there, the ride. The beauty is in there, as well. Now, there’s a lot of pain, but that’s what happens, for all of us."

Clarkson had been married to Blackstock since 2013 before filing for divorce in June 2020. The former couple—who share children River Rose, 9, and Remington, 7—went through a lengthy legal battle over their assets and custody agreements for nearly two years before the divorce was finalized in March 2022.

But the American Idol alum also made it clear that her new album wasn't just written for the sake of putting out a hit piece on her ex, as she also told Kotb and Hoda & Jenna co-host Jenna Bush Hager that releasing songs about her personal life is more of a healing method for her than anything else.

"It's more a necessity," she said of writing Chemistry. "I didn't set out to make an album. That's how I heal and process and figure out where I am at is writing because I am not always great at communicating in person."

"Thats how I heal. That's why I wrote it," she added.

Chemistry is out now and available to stream across multiple platforms.
