Kelly Clarkson is opening up about how her family is doing amid her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. The Voice coach, who filed for divorce in June, shared the rare update with Willie Geist in a new interview on Today.

“I mean, it’s no secret. My life has been a little bit of a dumpster,” Clarkson told Geist. Personally, it’s been a little hard the last couple months.”

“I’ve been talking to friends that have been through divorce. I don’t know how people go through that without having some kind of outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved,” the mother of two added.

Clarkson filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences.” She also requested joint custody of the former couple’s kids, River Rose, 6, and Remy, 4.

Although Clarkson previously shared that she’s a “very open person,” she told the Los Angeles Times that she’d be keeping details of the divorce private. “I’m not going to be able to be truly open about this in certain aspects because there’s kids involved,” she said.

“I think that I will navigate a way in which to be open and honest about it eventually, probably via the show, and it’ll probably, I’m assuming, happen organically when someone says something in conversation or something,” she added.

Clarkson also shared with Geist that she’d be pouring a lot of her emotions into her upcoming album, which will be released next year.

“This’ll probably be the most personal one I’ve ever released,” Clarkson said. “And the whole record is basically every emotion you experience from the beginning of a relationship to the end of what it is now or where it is now.”

“It’s been very therapeutic for me,” she added. “It’s very honest.”

She also said her kids have listened to some of the songs, which has been “weird” for her. “There’s one that my kids sing in the car. ‘Cause I’m going through mixes, and I’m just, like, ‘This is weird,” she said. “Like, it’s your relationship. I’ve never written about my life to where my kids are, like, singing along.”
