Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Helping Her 4-Year-Old Son Overcome Speech and Hearing Issues

Kelly Clarkson is opening up about her four-year-old son Remington "Remy" Alexander's struggles with speech as a toddler.

The singer and Voice coach says that Remy's speech issues were initially so severe that she and her husband, Brandon Blackstock, feared that their son might be deaf. They were surprised to find that the real root of the issue was something much simpler, albeit still serious.

"He had a speech problem because he had this ear problem when he was a baby. We didn't know," Kelly tells People magazine. "But way deep down in his ears, he got clogged up with a ton of wax where we thought, almost, he was deaf because he spoke as if he was underwater."

"We found [out] it was something simple, but it pushed him back almost nine months," she continues. "So we've been working really hard with his speech and he's still doing his speech therapist via Zoom."

Kelly, who is self-isolating with her family on their beautiful Montana ranch amid the coronavirus crisis, says they are overjoyed with the progress that Remy has made so far.

"The big milestone for us is Remy getting to really find out his own personality and his identity, because it's been frustrating for him to not be able to really vocalize his emotion," she explains. "It's a really important thing and it's very frustrating for them and us because we can't communicate all the time. The fact that he's making full sentences now and full-on engaging with us is really a blessing."

Kelly also shared about life on her Montana ranch, where she, Brandon, Remy, the couple's 5-year-old daughter, River Rose, and Brandon's 13-year-old son, Seth, have been practicing social distancing.

Although Kelly admits the family is suffering from a case of "cabin fever," she says they feel very fortunate to be safe and healthy.

"At the end of the day, I know people who have had coronavirus and I'm just very lucky and we're very blessed to not have been sick," she says. "We keep reminding our kids of that and we keep reminding each other of that."

We are so happy to hear that Remy's speech issues are improving, and that the whole family is doing well!
