Kelly Clarkson Opened Up About Her Divorce on the Season Premiere of Her Talk Show

Kelly Clarkson has had a very eventful summer, even if she spent most of it at home like the rest of us. The singer opened up about what she’s been going through on the season two premiere of The Kelly Clarkson Show, which saw her back in the studio for the first time in months, albeit with a virtual audience due to COVID-19 restrictions.

For context: Clarkson announced she and husband Brandon Blackstock were getting divorced back in June, and she hasn’t shied away from talking about its effect on her life in the months since. She revealed on her show that she didn’t see any of these big changes coming.

“I’m so glad I can still connect with all of you in my studio because, as you probably know, 2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life,” she said. “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came.”

While Kelly Clarkson hasn’t shied away from addressing her breakup, she explained on her show that there are some limitations around what she’ll be discussing.

“What I’m dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart; it involves a lot of little hearts. We have four kids,” Clarkson said. “Divorce is never easy. We’re both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts.”

She continued, “I’m usually very open, and I usually talk about everything, but in this case, I will talk a little bit here and there about how it affects me personally but probably won’t go too far into it because I’m a mama bear and my kids come first. Although I do love you all.”

If you’re looking for something of a silver lining in Clarkson’s situation, she has hinted that her next album will be, at least to some degree, about her divorce—and you know we love full-on emotional songs from her. “The whole record is basically every emotion you experience from the beginning of a relationship to the end of what it is now,” she told Willie Geist on Sunday Today

We can’t wait to scream-sing every tune loudly while in the car or the shower.
