Kelly Clarkson is attempting to reason with the Swifties following a comment she made about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s rumoured relationship.

On Friday 20 October, the singer said on The Kelly Clarkson Show that the tight end and Grammy winner had turned watching football into an episode of Real Housewives. “That’s hilarious,” she said during her interview with Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang. The two were discussing the show doing a skit on the NFL commentary, which featured a cameo from Kelce.

“It’s not hilarious how it is literally taking over the NFL for people that like watching sports now. It’s like you’re watching Housewives,” Clarkson continued. “They’re just talking about gossip things and you’re like: ‘So what about the play?’ But they’re taking over!”

Although, she did go on to praise Swift during the episode in question, as she said: “I think we’ve all been a fan of her music. She’s such a great writer.”

Enough fans of Swift seemed to take this personally, as Clarkson went on to release a public service announcement on Instagram on Saturday 21 October. “Just a quick public service announcement everybody since this seems to be breaking news…” her statement began.

“Do not fall prey to clickbait, trash reporters twisting the facts again. I did not bash anyone’s romance. I am pro romance. Yay romance. Did y’all even watch what I actually said on my show? I just said I want to watch football when I tune in to watch football. Seems like an appropriate request.”

She concluded: “Okay, carry on, and GO COWBOYS!”

However, some people in the comments section still didn’t think Clarkson was being sincere. “This is rich coming from someone who invited Joe Alwyn onto her show to boost viewership from Taylor fans,” one comment began. “You want to complain about using the person someone is dating to boost views and complain about the NFL monetising off of Taylor fans. You did both.”

Another commenter agreed, writing, “Well, that’s a little catty. It’s not her fault. I’m pretty sure if she could have a private relationship, she would. Plus I think you’re a teensy bit jealous which I don’t understand.”

Other commenters were fellow football-watching Swifities, who agreed with Clarkson that the talk about Swift and Kelce’s relationship may have gone a bit too far.

“Literally like I’m a huge Swiftie and it bothers me that NFL is so caught up in covering Taylor & Travis’s love life…like mind your own business and show what people came to watch,” one person commented.

“Agreed!” another comment began. “A big Taylor Swift fan, but it should not be focused on her, it should be focused on football!! It makes sense if they show her once or twice on camera since she’s one of the most famous people in the world, however, it should not be FOCUSED on her.”

Swift was seen at Sunday’s Kansas City Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Kansas City. Promptly after the match, the professional athlete was spotted escorting Swift out of Arrowhead Stadium, helping her into a Rolls Royce, and leaving to go back to his newly purchased $6m pad for a post-game celebration.
