Kellogg’s to Release Banana Crème Frosted Flakes, Strawberry Rice Krispies in 2019
When it comes to breakfast cereal, Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies are undisputed classics of the genre. And while there’s something to be said or not messing with a winning formula, Kellogg’s has decided it would rather expand into bold, new flavor territory than play it safe.
Starting in 2019, cereal consumers can get their sticky fingers on three new boxes of unexpected flavors: Strawberry Krispies, Honey Nut Frosted Flakes, and—most unexpected of all— banana creme Frosted Flakes. Though each seems like a nod towards the sugary sweetness of breakfast cereals past, each is “naturally flavored with other natural flavors,” for whatever that’s worth.
Given that Rice Krispies (OG edition) aren’t all that sweet to begin with, the introduction of a strawberry variation definitely stands out. Kellogg’s says it’s the “first new flavor in more than 10 years from the Rice Krispies line-up,” so that definitely goes down as a big deal. Not only that, but you can make strawberry Rice Krispie Treats and everyone (who doesn’t know about the new cereal) will think you’re some kind of baking genius worthy of Paul Hollywood’s approval.
Meanwhile, the Honey Nut Frosted Flakes seems like a play to steal the thunder of one of General Mills’ signature cereals. It’s “made with a blend of real honeys, brown-butter notes and a nutty flavor,” making it sound like much more of a gourmet experience than our friend Tony the Tiger is usually known for. Similarly, the dessert-like Banana Crème Frosted Flakes promise “toasted corn aromatics” that help deliver “a banana cream pie experience in a bowl.”
It’s not the first time that Frosted Flakes or Rice Krispies have expanded their flavor range, but it sure seems like another sign that sugary cereal is mounting something of a comeback. Will we all be making new year’s resolutions to stop eating healthy at breakfast and treat ourselves instead? Who knows, but with new varieties of old favorites available in 2019, committing to that goal just got a little easier.
