Katy Perry Showed Up To The 2018 Met Gala As An IRL Angel

Katy Perry loves a spectacle, and the 2018 Met Gala red carpet was no different. The 33-year-old singer took this year’s theme—“Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”—to new heights (literally) by wearing enormous angel wings. Katy paired the statement accessories with a gold Versace dress featuring a long-sleeve chainmail overlay and thigh-high gold boots. The singer styled her hair in a platinum blonde pixie cut. Her look alone would have made her stand out in a crowd, but, of course, Katy made her entrance in a white vintage car that showed off the wings that reached well above her head and down to the floor.

Katy is no stranger to making a huge statement on the Met Gala red carpet (and, let’s be honest, on all red carpets she steps on). Last year, the Swish Swish singer wore a custom, red tulle creation from John Galliano for the Maison Margiela “Artisanal” collection. Not only did she have one of the most memorable looks of the night last year, but she also made headlines for hinting at her new music (the word “Witness” was embroidered on her veil, leading fans to correctly guess the name of the following album).

Though Katy doesn’t seem to be making any hidden musical references with her 2018 look, she obviously took a liking to the theme; the singer has been outspoken in the past about her religious upbringing and has a tattoo that reads “Jesus” on her wrist. “My house was church on Sunday morning, church on Sunday night, church on Wednesday evening; you don’t celebrate Halloween; Jesus gives you your Christmas presents; we watch Bill O’Reilly on TV,” she told Vogue in 2017. “That was my whole childhood and youth and early teens. I still have conditioned layers dropping off of me by the day.”

Before the 2018 Met Gala, Katy posted photos to her Instagram Stories reminiscing about her past Met Gala looks as well as a video of her “good luck charm” rosaries that were blessed by Pope Francis when they met recently. At one point on the carpet, Katy also kneeled on the steps, still wearing her heavy wings, in a gesture that seemed to mimic praying.
