The urges for random, and albeit, strange food cravings during pregnancy is nothing new. However, singer-songwriter Katy Perry has discovered that indulging in food cravings during a pandemic is not easy, especially since you can’t just send someone to the supermarket to fetch a jar of pickles.

A day after the world saw the music video for Perry’s newest song “Never Worn White,” revealing her sweet baby bump in March, she took to Instagram Live to talk about her pregnancy while munching on dried mangos. “It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep,” she says in the video. “I had to reveal it at some point. It was getting pretty obvious.”

Since unveiling the big news, the 35-year-old has spoken out about how she’s been dealing with her pregnancy while self-isolating during the COVID-19 crises. She virtually joined American Idol co-judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, on Good Morning America and explained that “things are going very well, all things considered.”

The Teenage Dream singer says she’s feeling grateful for a lot and that she’s taking things “one day at a time.” But as for her newfound cravings, she says going to the grocery store to quickly satisfy her urges is proving to be a little harder while on lockdown.

“I think it’s one of those things where usually in the past, you’ve heard stories of pregnant women craving something and the husband or fiancé goes and rushes to the grocery store at 2 in the morning,” she says. “There’s no rushing to the grocery store at 2 in the morning.”

Perry told Prevention that she doesn’t eat healthy 100% of the time. “Let’s be honest, it’s 60/40,” she says. However, like many pregnant women who crave sweets, dairy, pickles, and fruit, the mommy-to-be has had the latter on her mind, even if she can’t always get her hands on it.

“It’s like, ‘Do you really want that watermelon?’ ‘Do you really need that orange?’ ‘Do you really need that pickle?’” she says, “Or ‘Do you want to, like, risk your life for a pickle?’”

The one craving she didn’t see coming is spicy food (or anything with good ol’ hot sauce)! “I literally never cared for spice, and now? I have to carry Tabasco sauce in my purse,” she said during an Instagram Live. “I am that woman. I am Karen with her Tabasco sauce.” Perry even dished to songwriter Benny Blanco on his livestream, saying she’s been adding a dash of hot sauce to avocado toast. “My number one craving is avocado toast with Tabasco,” she says. “I’ve never been into spicy foods in my life, but light my mouth up right now!”

Although she’s been avoiding beef because it “grosses” her out, she’s found an alternative. “I’m not really into red meat, but thank God for the Impossible Burger,” she says in her IG Live. “That basically tastes my red meat and when I do want it, I do that.”

Perry will welcome her baby girl with fiancé Orlando Bloom this summer. Her soon-to-be bundle of joy will be her first child.
