Katy Perry Dressed Like a Chandelier for the 2019 Met Gala

Katy Perry is never one to shy away from an over-the-top look. She's worn a dress made out of bedazzled fruit, performed in an rendering of an American flag, and has even attended fashion week in a mini-dress adorned with muppet characters. But her 2019 Met Gala outfit hands down takes the cake. For the "Camp: Notes on Fashion," inspired evening Perry wore a chandelier. Yes, you read that right. Her silver, bejeweled Moschino dress was accompanied by thee layers of light-up candles—with the final one resting on her head.

According to The New York Times, Perry's headpiece weighed in at a cool 40 pounds. When asked how she would sit down, she told the Times, “You don’t sit down at the Met,” before busting into a rendition of Sia's 2014 hit song, “Chandelier."

And between the headpiece, the light display, and her maybe or maybe-not nod to Beauty and the Beast, the Internet was quick to declare her one of the best-dressed of the evening. One Twitter user said, said, "Katy Perry won Met Gala. The true light." And another tweeted, "Katy Perry is coming to give back everything the darkness stole."

The dress was designed by Jeremy Scott who told Vogue, "Who has ever been to a ball that did not have a chandelier? The idea of elegance itself is quite camp and I wanted to play with that concept, poke a lil fun at it with a loving nudge.” According to Vogue, Scott's team spent six weeks placing thousands of Swarovski crystals on the dress before hanging the actual chandelier pieces on it. Hidden in the dress is also a built-in corset with 18 steel bones and two hidden battery packs, for the light up effect. Because as Scott says, “I mean who wants to wear a chandelier that doesn't light up!”

Perry walked the carpet solo, without her fiancé Orlando Bloom. While the two have never walked the Met Gala red carpet together, in 2018 they both attended and wore matching Tamagotchis.
