Katy Perry Delivers the Met Gala’s Most Meme-Worthy Look
Singer Katy Perry, host of last year’s Met Gala, arrived this year in custom Versace with cohost Donatella Versace.
If anyone takes the Met Gala seriously, it’s Katy Perry. The pop diva’s love of dressing up lends itself well to fashion’s biggest night, and every year without fail she outdoes herself with an over-the-top red carpet statement. Perry has covered herself in LED lights for a holographic gown back in 2010, gone full glitz in Dolce & Gabbana’s interpretation of punk back in 2013, and went avant-garde in masked Maison Margiela just last year. This time around, Perry went the extra mile with a winged Versace creation that took the “Heavenly Bodies” theme to a literal place. With a blinding gold lamé minidress, thigh-high boots, and towering feathered wings so large that she had to enter the museum sideways, Perry was at her excessive best.
Perry told reporters on the red carpet that she was inspired by Donatella Versace’s sketches and asked the designer to go even bolder. It’s clear that Perry and stylist Jamie Mizrahi let their imaginations take flight and their inventive choice came with an added bonus. Seemingly destined to be Photoshopped into religious artwork, re-created by Instagram users, and talked about for days on end, Perry’s meme-worthy look didn’t just capture the moment. It tapped into the Internet’s love of kitsch. For a performer who has worn everything from whipped-cream bras to a working carousel, angel wings are comparatively tame—but she proves no idea is too extreme for the Met.
