Katie Holmes Says Dawson's Creek Is Great Because of Its "Simplicity"

Katie Holmes is looking back at her breakout role.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the CODA actor reflected on what made her hit teen drama Dawson's Creek so memorable, saying that it reminds viewers of a simpler time, pre-social media.
"I think it's simplicity. It was, you know, four kids trying to figure out how to grow up. Going through the emotions of that," she said when asked about the show's popularity. "That was before phones and before the world really changed. So, there's an element to it -- to a right now -- that’s very nostalgic. Like, wow, I can’t even remember that time before we were always looking at our screen."
The actor also looked back at her first-ever acting credit, when she appeared in Ang Lee's film The Ice Storm 25 years ago.
"It was so exciting," she told the outlet. "I think it was, like, my first or second audition and Avy Kaufman was the casting director. ... I remember I was a junior in high school and it was really exciting, and Ang [Lee] was so lovely. Fred Elmes was our cinematographer, and it was really thrilling. And I was so nervous, but I just did my lines."
The actor's latest project Alone Together premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in NYC last month, with Holmes writing, directing, and starring in the COVID-era film. Last Wednesday, Holmes spoke with GMA about working on the movie at the peak of the pandemic.
"I tried to write something kind of simple enough to shoot it in pretty much one location, and I decided to just lean into the pandemic, since we've all gone through it together," she said. "This is a love story, because I felt like we'd all gone through so much. And for me during that time, I really gravitated towards watching things that I knew the ending, it was pretty hopeful."
