Though the office siren aesthetic is trending — aka, a look that revolves around tight pencil skirts, low-cut button-downs, and slept-in eyeliner — I’m unconvinced of its practicality. But, that doesn’t mean I’m against sexying-up a wardrobe basic; I just want to be able to wear it without feeling like I’m trying to be someone else. Fortunately, there’s an alternative Katie Holmes just sported that’s both wearable and already in my wardrobe.

When the actress stepped out for the Chanel Fifth Avenue store opening in New York City earlier this month, she opted for a look that was somehow classic yet sexy. Holmes wore chic, cap-toe Mary Janes and a matching black sweater set from the brand. The pants featured a wide leg and pockets with gleaming gold closures, a detail that was carried up to the cardigan. But, while most cardis would probably include — at minimum — three buttons up the front, she chose to button just one, leaving the knit almost entirely open and exposing her lace-y bra underneath.

Her way of wearing the cardigan felt like a rebellious take on quiet luxury, pairing Chanel’s timeless design details with a bare midriff and that lace bralette. It was elegant but also nonchalant, reminding me that this might be the best — and sexiest — way to wear my favorite spring layer.

This is far from the first time a celebrity has made the typically modest knit-piece look, well, not modest — in fact, it’s not even Holmes’ first time (who would forget that iconic Khaite cardigan moment). Stars like Blake Lively, Gigi Hadid, and Kaia Gerber have all worn the wardrobe staple in the same way, closing just a few buttons at the center. The styling creates a deep V-neck, cinched waist, and gives the piece an almost cropped look; even then, it doesn’t feel too revealing. It’s cooler, more casual, and of course, a little sexier than your standard, buttoned-up cardigan.

It’s safe to say I’m obsessed with this Holmes-approved trend. It doesn’t require a wardrobe overhaul — in fact, you can always just try it with a cardigan already in your closet — and can take your favorite spring knit from the office to a dinner date.
