Katie Holmes Pulled Off an Ultra-Distressed Knit Maxi Dress on the Red Carpet

Katie Holmes put an edgy twist on her signature minimalist style while attending the red-carpet opening of the American Ballet Theatre’s Like Water for Chocolate in New York City last night.

For the occasion, the Dawson’s Creek alum delivered a monochromatic, all-black fashion statement via a distressed knit maxi dress from Chloé. The statement piece featured large swaths of gaps in the knit fabric across the torso and the legs. She appropriately paired the dress with glittering black ballet flats adorned with a delicate bow at the toe, and further accessorized with a black rectangular Chloé clutch and layers of gold pendant necklaces.

Holmes often opts for neutral palettes and monochromatic ensembles to make a fashion statement during public appearances.

For instance, she again wore all-black to attend the Red Sea International Film Festival’s Women’s Stories Gala last month. At the time, she stepped out in a structured hourglass double-breasted blazer with a glossy satin lapel. She paired the top with a black maxi skirt featuring a half-zipped silver zipper down the center. For a pop of color, she opted for bejeweled hot-pink slingback pumps from Manolo Blahnik and a bright red lip.

The actor talked to Bazaar.com last year about her mindset when it comes to dressing up for high-profile events.

“We live in a world where we have a premiere and you want to look nice, and it turns into being a fashion person, and I’m like, ‘Well, I just like to look nice, I’m not really a fashion person.’ We all just want to look good,” she said.
