Katie Holmes Just Stepped Out in the Most Controversial Shoe Trend of the Summer

Since her Dawson’s Creek days, we’ve looked to Katie Holmes for relatable fashion inspiration. The woman knows overalls can be sexy and she’s not afraid to rock a bold print with statement sleeves. While we appreciate those style instincts, we cannot say the same for her recent decision to rock a ’90s trend that should have definitely remained in the past.

We regret to inform you, dear reader, that Katie Holmes just wore high-heel flip-flops…which means they’re officially back. (Groan.)

These relics of fashion decisions past are, in our humble opinion, not only a very easy way to twist your ankle, but also a reminder of times when Wet Seal was cool. That said, they take a very specific kind of cool girl to pull them off and the 40-year-old actress fits the bill.

Holmes selected the Gianvito Rossi Calypso kitten heels ($695) in tan for a day out in New York this past Sunday. She paired her high-priced thongs with a vintage jean jacket, a black-and-white striped cotton dress, tortoiseshell sunnies, delicate gold jewelry and a red Chanel cross-body bag.

While we don’t condone the use of high-heel flip-flops, we have to give Holmes props on the outfit she pulled together. If ever there was an ensemble that would make these shoes “work,” it’s definitely Holmes’s casual day look.

But, while we might replicate the oversize jean jacket and striped dress combo, we’ll probably just opt for normal flip-flops. Just saying.
