Can we all collectively agree that denim-on-denim looks are back?

Welcome to The Blueprint, where we highlight our favorite celebrity looks — and then pull pieces to help you get the look, too.

I haven’t been this invested in a Canadian tuxedo since, well, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake twinned in them on the red carpet. But in 2024? It’s Katie Holmes’ that’s the blueprint.

The Dawson’s Creek star is constantly surprising me with her (as one of my colleagues once called it) “wonderfully weird” street style. And this week, she pulled out a polarizing denim-on-denim look from Banana Republic consisting of a sleeveless vestHeidi Klum just wore a similar one, too — and matching wide-leg denim trousers. And for a modern stamp, she topped it off with some square-toe loafers and a chunky belt.

While the trend might seem like a fashion faux pas, it’s actually trending majorly among the stylish set: Julianne Moore nailed the trend when she stepped out in an all-denim look in March, while we’ve seen Sydney Sweeney and Kendall Jenner pair denim jackets with matching jeans recently (the former, more than once).

Canadian tuxedos can be done in a bunch of different ways: If we’re taking it literally, I might actually opt for a matching set. They’re really ranking right now among A-Listers, like Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow, and they’re so easy to wear. They’re also imperfectly perfect for both casual and formal spring events like dinner dates, outdoor picnics, and more.

I absolutely love this denim shirt jacket from The Drop because it looks on-point for the chillier days of spring, and it comes in the same wash as these straight-leg jeans, a celeb-approved silhouette, for an easy pairing.

But conversely, I’m not opposed to mixing and matching different washes since denim is like a neutral in that way. Also, Holmes did it, so why can’t I? I think this cropped shirt, which comes in sizes S to XL, could mesh well with a darker wash, like the one on these cut-off shorts, or even something a bit deeper à la Luvamia’s high-waisted pair — either of which you’ll want in the dog days of summer.

Don’t forget to nab some loafers to complete the look. I already wear my round-toe pair to death, but the square shape on Holmes’ is somehow both modern and retro at the same time. This $33 pair is similar, and I think the burgundy-brown color looks really luxe.

If Holmes’ outfit is your new blueprint, too, keep scrolling to shop more denim and loafers from $16 to recreate her look.
