Katie Holmes was basically the original champion of norm-core. Circa Dawson’s Creek, she wore American Eagle and posed for J.Crew (pre-Jenna Lyons, sequins, and New York Fashion Week presentations). When she grew up, she favored jeans, t-shirts, and blazers. She even started her own collection, Holmes & Yang, full of luxurious basics, and told Glamour magazine: "I like what I like. And I repeat a lot. But I'm always comfortable in jeans — I feel like I can really do anything when I'm in them." In other words, sex kitten was never really her thing. But last night, a whole new Katie showed up to Zac Posen’s FW 2015 runway show in New York City.
It takes a lot of sass to stand out in the same room as Rihanna and Naomi Campbell, but wore a cherry red coat with a scarlet lip and slicked back hair. On her way into the show, she even smirked for the cameras, a far cry from her typically shy sideways smile. And when she took her coat off, she revealed a tight black dress, in a signature Posen silhouette that highlighted her slim figure.
Celebrities stick to their signature style because it’s easier to play it safe when your picture is being taken hundreds of times each day from every which direction. But if you’re going to take a risk, fashion week’s the time to do it. And based on last night’s look, Holmes should sex it up more often.
