'I don’t think Susan is real. I’m so sad.'

Recently, journalist Katie Couric shared a text exchange on social media, framing it as a wrong-number-gone-right scenario. But after further investigation, it looks like Couric might've fallen victim to a scam.

In the original Instagram post, Couric shared a series of screenshots showcasing a random text she got that said, "A rat was in my toilet. I am beside myself! I'm contacting the super," and the following exchange of messages.

As Couric asked who the person was, they started chatting and had a friendly conversation. Then, the other person invited Couric to Christmas dinner and even told the presenter about her smoking habit.

The 65-year-old captioned the post, "Some of you may have seen this exchange on my stories but I wanted to share here too. Susan, you made my week… and I am really really sorry about that rat 🐀 🥴❤️🎄☃️."

Many people found the messages to be amusing, including Adam Scott, who wrote, "Katie you’re the coolest."

Hilarie Burton wrote, "Bahahaha!!! You’re hilarious. Xoxo."

But soon after, Couric edited the post with some more information.

She added to the caption, "UPDATE: Okay… I am so disappointed. I think this is a scam. I don’t think Susan is real. I’m so sad. (A famous friend of mine got the same text and immediately blocked it.) But look how this brought us together! So there’s that. Take care Susan, and even if you’re not really Susan, I hope if you do smoke that you’ll quit. 🥲💔."

Bethenny Frankel commented on the post, "OMG I’m dying that you all thought that was real. I instantly blocked."

Model and co-founder of the nonprofit The Chain, Christina Grasso, wrote, "Susan we were all rooting for you how dare you."

Despite the disappointing ending, the journey was fun while it lasted. Also, maybe more people will learn to be wary of random "wrong number" text messages.
