Katie Austin is all about getting you to move and eat healthy — but doing so for the right reasons. Instead of harping on weight loss and dieting, Katie asks her audience to get moving for the sake of their mental and physical health.

The fitness personality, who recently made her third appearance in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, creates original fitness, food and lifestyle content for nearly 2 million followers. While she’s certainly followed in the footsteps of her mother, fitness icon Denise Austin, Katie has forged a path that is wholly her own.

In the latest episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series, We Should Talk, Katie opened up about the evolution of her career, how she’s striving to bring more transparency to what she puts out in the world, how she’s looked up to her mom over the years, her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit hat trick and her goals for the future.

“I want to make sure people work hard in their workouts and they’re eating healthy, but at the same time, you’re human. Enjoy your life. My mom has always said, ‘One body, one life,’ but at the same time, live in moderation. That’s what life is all about,” Katie told In The Know. “[I also want to be] making sure people feel seen and know that they’re not alone, because sometimes through social media you can be comparing yourself a lot. I’ve even gotten stuck in those situations before. If I see someone posting some more realistic things or being more real, then I feel less alone. That’s really the entire point of [what I do]. I think social media in general is just becoming more authentic.”

“In my mom’s day, it was very much about losing weight and calories, but my whole brand is making sure people are moving for their mental health. I will rarely, rarely talk about weight loss,” she continued. “I’ll never have programs for weight loss or to count calories or worry about the scale. It’s really about moving your body to feel good, feel more confident and for your mental health. In the fitness industry, diet culture is the way you make the most money, but I will never have a specific diet plan that I want my followers to stick to. I think diet plans are something that can kill your mental health and make you feel like you’re going crazy about what you have to eat. [They also make you feel like] you have to stick to such a harsh regimen, and every single body is so different. My whole thing is to make sure that I’m giving people recipes and inspiration from what I eat, but never being like, ‘Here’s a three-month plan on what you have to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.’ Unfortunately, that’s how you make the most money in the fitness industry — [talking about] weight loss and dieting — but those are two things I will always stay away from.”
