Kate Winslet Gave a Rare Interview About Her ‘Stay-at-Home Dad’ Husband, Edward Abel Smith
Mare (of Easttown) might have had plenty of family troubles, but the actor who played her, Kate Winslet, has a happy home. She praised her husband, Edward Abel Smith, in a recent New York Times interview, giving readers a rare peak into her personal life.
Calling him “the superhot, superhuman, stay-at-home dad,” Winslet added that Edward Abel Smith—who previously used the name Ned Rocknroll and is the nephew of Sir Richard Branson, the Virgin Airlines guy—is a caretaker not only to their seven-year-old son, Bear, but also to her. “He looks after us, especially me. I said to him earlier, like, ‘Neddy, could you do something for me?’ He just went, ‘Anything,’” she told the NYT. “He is an absolutely extraordinary life partner.”
She continued, “I'm so, so, so lucky. For a man who is severely dyslexic, as he is, he's great at testing me on lines. It's so hard for him to read out loud, but he still does it.”
Winslet revealed to the NYT her husband “didn't particularly plan on meeting and marrying a woman who is in the public eye and therefore having been so judged”; however, she said, he maintains a degree of calm in his life though healthy habits: “He's vegan, does yoga, breath work, and cold-water swims.”
Winslet recently earned praise for her performance in the HBO murder mystery series Mare of Easttown. Apparently, her husband was supportive not just in helping her learn lines but also in portraying the character's sexuality during a revealing scene. “In episode one, [Mare is] having sex on a couch,” she told the NYT. “I said to my husband, ‘Am I okay with that? Is it all right that I’m playing a middle-aged woman who is a grandmother who does really make a habit of having one-night stands?’ He’s like, ‘Kate, it’s great. Let her do it.’”
