Kate Says William Worries About Her Wanting Another Baby

The Duchess of Cambridge began her two-day solo trip to Copenhagen today, an official visit on behalf of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. While discussing working with young children, Kate said, "It makes me very broody." (For the uninitiated, if someone is feeling broody, it means they feel as if they would like to have a baby.)

"William always worries about me meeting under one-year-olds. I come home saying ‘let’s have another one," Kate said, per the Daily Mail's Rebecca English. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William have three children: Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3.

This is not the first time she made this joke—in a February 2019 visit to Northern Ireland, Kate shared she felt "broody" when she met a 5-month-old baby. The baby's father asked Kate, "Baby number four?" to which she joked in reply, "I think William would be a little worried." In January 2020, too, Kate told a fan, "I don’t think William wants any more" babies.

Earlier this year in January, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge traveled to Lancashire, where Kate held a baby girl. Prince William joked, "Don't give my wife any more ideas!"

Kate's royal work in the past decade has focused on early childhood education, and she has said her passion is "learning about how babies' brains develop and how our early childhood influences the adult brain." In June 2021, The Duchess of Cambridge launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which will "drive awareness of and action on the extraordinary impact of the early years, in order to transform society for generations to come."

So despite Kate's broody feelings and meeting many, many babies, it's unlikely she and William will welcome a fourth child to their family anytime soon—if Prince William's reactions are to be believed.
