Kate Middleton Trades Her Fascinator for Something New

Kate Middleton has cultivated a royal sense of style that is tried and true. The Duchess of Cambridge relies on a stable of renowned British designers (think, Alexander McQueen and Emilia Wickstead) and always chooses the most appropriately polished designs. But even a Duchess can take an unexpected fashion risk: Middleton did just that today when she stepped out for Sunday service with Prince William at the Sandringham Estate in England (Queen Elizabeth II was also present). She traded in her signature fascinator hat for something brand new.

The chapeau in question? Middleton chose a blue fedora by Hicks & Brown that had a feathered embellishment around the brim (the feather work is a signature of the English accessories brand). The style is a spunkier, more casual hat than the elaborate fascinators Middleton typically sports for public appearances. (They’re often by Philip Treacy.) She paired her new accessory with a tailored two-tone coat, knee-high suede boots, a quilted clutch, and gloves—all signature Kate pieces to balance out her new topper.
