Kate Middleton Has the Sweetest Speech Prepared for a School Assembly She’ll Lead

Kate Middleton is a duchess and the future queen consort of England, but she’s spent a lot time recently—like many of us—on video calls.

And her most recent appearance combines two topics close to her heart: children’s well-being and mental health. Middleton led a school assembly for Oak National Academy, which is an online classroom and resource hub created by teachers. According to Hello!, it was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has delivered 12 million lessons to children and teachers since it launched.

The actual video assembly will go live on Thursday, June 18, but the academy released a teaser clip. “Drumroll please… 🥁🥁🥁 This week,  were absolutely thrilled to have The Duchess of Cambridge leading our assembly on kindness ❗️❤️️️️👫,” they posted on Instagram. “HRH and the lovely pupils from Waterloo Primary Academy will be exploring what it means to be kind 😁. This assembly was created in collaboration with children’s mental health charity @_place2be. Don’t miss it this Thursday at 10am on the @tesnews YouTube channel!”

People also got a sneak peek at what the duchess will say in her speech about kindness and mental health. “Talking to someone, whether it’s a friend, family member, or teacher, is something you can do to make yourself feel that little bit better,” she says. “And you can also play your part in helping others feel better too, whether offering a friendly ear or helping someone in need. Small acts of kindness can go such a long way. But as we help others, we mustn’t forget to nurture ourselves, by taking the time to focus on the things that make us feel happy too.””

“Being kind and considerate is a vital lesson for children at any time, but especially so in the current pandemic," Oak National Academy's principal Matt Hood said in a statement. “We must encourage young people to talk about their feelings and to know that it’s normal to feel a bit anxious or upset right now.”

Along with leading school assemblies, Kate Middleton has also been promoting her Hold Still campaign, which asked citizens of the U.K. to share photographs that illustrate their lives during this unique time. She will then help choose, in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, 100 images to be showcased digitally.
