A new role calls for a hairstyle change for Kate Middleton.

Today, the Princess of Wales, 41, traveled to Norfolk to step into her brand-new role as Colonel-in-Chief of 1st the Queen’s Dragoon Guards. (She was given the title by King Charles back in August.)

Princess Catherine styled her hair straight with a slight curl at the ends. The style is much more relaxed and simple than her signature beachy waves. We’ve seen her rock different hairstyles in the past (don’t even get us started on her very recent Farrah Fawcett-inspired hairdo), but she hasn’t opted for something this sleek in quite a while.

The Princess of Wales was wearing a turtleneck, a sweater and a black blazer. She accessorized with a red poppy brooch to commemorate military members who have died in war ahead of Remembrance Day. Shortly after her arrival, the royal changed into combat gear and endured a military training course (for beginner’s, of course).

During the outing, Princess Catherine also spoke to Senior Officers about the regiment and learned what life is like for the 1st the Queen’s Dragoon Guards (aka QDG). She also handed out Long Service and Good Conduct medals to several service members.

According to the official website, the QDG “is the Cavalry Regiment of Wales and the Border Counties.” They specialize in reconnaissance, which is “the art of seeking out the enemy and understanding how they operate.”
