Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, was supposed to commence today. But, as the global coronavirus pandemic continues, the competition will not go on as planned. The call was made back in April to cancel the event for the first time since World War II, but this morning, Kate Middleton, royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which hosts Wimbledon every year, offered tennis fans a message of hope.

The Duchess of Cambridge narrated a short video, which has been shared on Wimbledon's social media accounts to mark what would have been the opening day.

"350 days, 14 hours, and 12 minutes between the last ball hit and when the next was meant to be. Over the years, your support has shaped this historic event. No matter the time of day nor the names on the scoreboard, you have always been there come rain or shine," she says as footage of iconic Wimbledon moments plays.

"This year, though things are very different. But we will bide our time until we sit at the edge of our seats again, and celebrate again. So when the time is right and we open the gates, we will be back again, and it will have been worth the wait."
