The Princess of Wales has been busy this week, and it seems she is turning to her Wimbledon wardrobe. Kate chose a polka dot Alessandra Rich dress previously worn to the Wimbledon men’s finals last year for a visit yesterday to support a charity helping women in the justice system. And today, she selected a pale pink Beulah dress that she wore for the men’s finals in 2021 as she headed out to an engagement in east London.

The Princess looked elegant as she arrived at the entrance of the Young Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum in Bethnal Green to officially open it ahead of the public being welcomed this Saturday. The museum is dedicated to people aged 0 - 14 and has undergone a huge refurbishment lasting for three years. Kate was joined by schoolchildren who were involved in its design and excited to show her the new facilities.

“She was very generous listening to all of the stories from the children, chapter after chapter,” Director of the V&A, Dr Tristram Hunt, told reporters afterwards. “They wanted to hug her a lot…She was suitably responsive,” he quipped.

He noted that Kate was interested in the space “as a parent” and “as an art historian” and also because of her royal work on the early years. “Really it was because of her focus through the Royal Foundation Centre For Early Childhood on the resilience and early years development. And what this place is about is how you create cultural confidence and creative enjoyment in the early years through objects and design and play and imagination. Because she’s across the research on this she understood what we were trying to do with the mini museum, the texture, the importance of learning through play.”

The Young V&A, which was previously known as the V&A Museum of Childhood, now has three new galleries called Play, Imagine and Design. There are almost 2,000 objects on display with exhibits designed to inspire children’s creativity. During her visit Kate explored a sensory landscape for toddlers as well as a space designed to show teenagers the history and process of video and boardgames design.

“It was a wonderful space but it was a slightly creepy, dark toy mausoleum which had its own vibe,” Hunt said about the museum before the redesign. “To see this and then to have the children in it today and using it in the way that we thought they might is really validating for the project.”

Kate has been royal Patron of the V&A since 2018.
