On Monday, a motorcyclist in Kate Middleton and Prince William's convoy collided with a pedestrian, who was crossing the street.

The woman has been identified as Irene Mayor, 83. She is currently in the hospital, in "serious but stable" condition, per the BBC. Mayor's daughter told the Sun, "She’s got lots of injuries. They are just keeping her stable at the moment."

The collision occurred in southwest London, just 300 yards from Mayor's home. Although the crash was at 12:50 p.m. U.K. time, Kate and William didn't learn of the incident until they arrived in Windsor for the Order of the Garter ceremony that afternoon.

The motorcyclist was reportedly on the wrong side of the street, clearing traffic for other vehicles in the convoy, when he collided with Mayor. A witness told the Sun, "His bike hit her and she spun round, off her feet and fell badly on the floor. The officer was devastated. But he was going on the wrong side of the road. It could have been so much worse."

It's understood that Kate and William have sent flowers and, according to a Kensington Palace spokesperson, will be in touch with Mayor going forward. "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were deeply concerned and saddened to hear about the accident on Monday afternoon," the spokesperson said, per the Telegraph. "Their Royal Highnesses have sent their very best wishes to Irene and her family and will stay in touch throughout every stage of her recovery."

Prince William, in particular, was reportedly keen to visit Mayor in the hospital, but a visit so soon after the accident was deemed intrusive. He hopes to meet with Mayor, when she and her family feel up to it.

As is standard procedure, the Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the incident.
