What Kate Middleton and Prince William's Signatures Reveal About Their Marriage
They might not be as outwardly lovey-dovey as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but by all accounts the Duke and Duchess in Cambridge are a close and loving couple.
Apart from their body language, handwriting experts (also known as graphologists) say that Kate and Will's signatures can tell a lot about their personalities and married life together.
Let's start with the Duchess. As Michelle Dresbold, handwriting expert and author of Sex, Lies, and Handwriting, notes, the Duchess exudes a lot of healthy confidence. One tiny detail at the end of her signature gives it away.
"If you look very closely you'll see there's a period after her name. That basically means, 'I'm the best, period,'" Dresbold told me. "People who are really assured of who they are and know they're the best in their field will put a period after their name."
But personal conviction isn't the only thing Kate's handwriting tells us about her, according to Dresbold. The "T" in her name is crossed strongly, which suggests that she's a dedicated goal-setter and achiever. What's also noteworthy is that the stem in her "T" balloons outward. This wide "T" signifies a person who is very concerned about criticism regarding the work that they do, says Dresbold.
"The wider that upper 'T' stem is, the more sensitive they are," Dresbold explains. "If a person has a wide 'T' like that, they're sensitive to personal things, how they're perceived, and about their job."
The final thing to note about Kate's handwriting are her high loops in the "C" and "T."
"When you have high upper loops it means the person puts emphasis on thought process and intellectual pursuits," Dresbold asserts.
As for her husband, Prince William's John Hancock (above) has a few telling qualities of its own. One of the most obvious being that the Duke of Cambridge's autograph isn't legible at all.
"When you have a signature that you can't make out, it means the person does not want the public to really know much about them," says Dresbold. "It's his way of saying, 'You don't have to know about me.'"
Despite being hard to read, Will does make sure to have his "I" dot directly over the stem - a sign that apparently means Will is a very loyal person. Dresbold can also tell that the second-in-line royal is an "extremely intelligent" person by the way he spaces out his letters.
"You'll notice a teeny-tiny space between the 'I' and the first 'L' in William. That tells me he lifted his hand to write the 'I' and dotted the letter right away. When you do that, it's because you're very smart and efficient. Your brain is thinking far ahead."
Even though the royals' signatures alone draw varying conclusions, when compared side-by-side, it becomes clear that the two work well together. Dresbold notes that both Kate and Will write in the middle of the page, signaling that they value being a part of a larger family or community and are very much team players. Meanwhile, the size of their signatures, while different, means that the Duke and Duchess complement each other quite nicely, says Dresbold.
"She writes bigger and his handwriting is more withdrawn. She embraces the attention and he doesn't mind it," Dresbold suggests. "He wants to be loyal and let her shine."
And shine the Duchess most definitely does.
