The royal family has been under fire for the past week following the fallout from publication of new royal book, Endgame. However, the working royals have kept calm and carried on, and the Princess of Wales continued in that vein today as she made a solo visit to a children’s hospital.

Kate officially opened the new day surgery unit at Evelina London children’s hospital in Westminster, London this morning. Wearing a dark blue pant suit by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen with stiletto heels, the Princess was poised as she spoke with staff and patients accessing the new facility.

“I was a bit anxious but she was really lovely, really down to earth,” said staffmember Alice Green, who works in admissions and the front desk. “She asked us about ourselves and how long we have been working here. She also said things like how we are the face of Evelina Children’s and how we are the first point of contact for people. She wishes us a Merry Christmas…I actually thought it would be a bit more forma, but it was actually really conformable and it was really easy speaking to her.”

The staff member recalled a conversation the Princess had with one of the children who had designed artwork that adorns the new centre. “She was really talking to [the children]. One of the children designed the artwork that’s inside the Evelina, there’s quite a lot of artwork around. The child told her about her back story, how her dad passed away a couple of years ago. Kate was just saying how it was really lovely that she’s now helping other people despite everything that she’s been through.”

Another staff member, outpatient sister Sharon Green, said that the visit meant a lot at this time of year. “She was asking if it’s busy and we said yes it is. She was asking us what we were doing over Christmas, whether we close or whether we’re open. Being outpatients we do close Christmas Day and Boxing Day. She was saying have a nice Christmas,” Sharon Green said. “It means a lot to have her come to see us, it’s really nice especially now around Christmas.”

Kate has visited Evelina London before, having been patron since 2018. The new day surgery facility provides care for children needing day surgery in one place, which the hospital says will enable them to treat up to an additional 2,300 children per year. It conducts low-complexity surgeries that can be done in a day such as some ear, nose and throat operations, some eye surgeries and reconstructive surgery after accidents.
