Kate Middleton Opens Up About the Pressure She Felt Picking Her Kids' Names

In her first solo outing as the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton visited Royal Surrey County Hospital’s maternity unit.

The deputy director of midwifery, Amy Stubbs, showed the Princess around the ward. "She was very relatable. She talked a lot about how it felt for her when she became a mother," Stubbs told People. "She just really talked about her own children including how they chose their names. A lot of the new mums and dads are thinking about how to choose names for their babies, and they spoke with her about how Kate and William made their choice."

Stubbs added, "She said they were their favorite names and that obviously the world was waiting for them to name their children—and that felt like quite a big pressure."

Ahead of the births of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, along with before the birth of Princes Harry and Meghan Markle's eldest, Archie, there was intense speculation around their names.

Prince William and Kate went the traditional route British royal name for their three children. For Prince George, it's a very kingly name: in British history, there have been six King Georges. The young prince, when he one day inherits the throne, will likely be the seventh King George.

Princess Charlotte, too, is a regal name; Queen Charlotte was the wife of King George III. Her middle names, Elizabeth and Diana, refer to Queen Elizabeth and Prince William's late mother, Princess Diana. Prince Louis, whose full name is Louis Arthur Charles, is named after his great-granduncle Louis Mountbatten and King Charles.
