Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Wore Matching Updos to Prince Charles's 70th Birthday

It was an updo kind of night for Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, who celebrated Prince Charles’s 70th birthday in nearly-identical hairstyles.

The royal dynamic duo traded their signature hairstyles — Middleton’s wavy blowout and Markle’s messy bun — for something slightly more polished by way of French twists. Middleton's version was slightly more intricate, with coils expertly pinned up the back, while Meghan opted for a simple-yet-chic style with her hair tucked behind her ear. Each paired their take on the evening-approved style with a set of sparkly statement earrings, smoky eye shadow, and pale pink lips.

This isn't the first time Meghan Markle has swapped her messy bun for a twist: While traveling through Fiji in October, she wore her hair in a more casual version of the style, decorated with fresh flowers. And while Kate Middleton hasn't tried the style yet, she's traditionally been a fan of a fancy bun for formal events.

Achieving the black tie-worthy style on your own is a surprisingly simple feat — even if you don't have your own royal glam squad on deck. "For a French twist that will last you all night, I never like to start with clean hair. Next-day hair is always best," explains hairstylist Teresa Cavaliere with Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa in Palm Beach, Florida, who starts by teasing the hair and spraying it with Paul Labrecque Polish and Seal Droplets from the shaft of the hair to the ends. Then, section the hair from the back of the ears to the top of the head.

"Pull that front-sectioned hair forward and tease the hair on the opposite side of the head where the French twist will lay. Next, take that hair and coil it around your hand, incorporating the sides and back that were left out and start to pin the twist flowing upwards towards the crown of the head." Finish the look with some shine spray (she likes Paul Labrecque Finish Shine Spray, "because who doesn't love shiny hair?"), and you'll be ready for a royal event of your own.
