The Queen is known for her love of big brooches, and today, the Duchess of Cambridge appears to be taking style cues from her grandmother-in-law. For Kate's surprise appearance today at the Westminster Abbey service in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, she accessorized her bespoke pale blue Alexander McQueen coat dress with a Sean Barrett hat, nude pumps, a cream-colored clutch, and a massive brooch.

Known as the Royal Air Force Dacre brooch, the diamond and ruby piece pinned to her chest was reportedly a gift to Kate when she became an Honorary Air Commandant in 2015. According to the Mirror, "The brooch used to be given to the best female cadet every year and it was the highest honour they could receive. However in 2015 the tradition was changed when it was decided women should be recognised in the same way as their male peers - with a sword."

The organization opted to give the jewelry to Kate as she took over the role from the Duke of Edinburgh.

While we've seen Duchess Kate several times over the summer, most recently at the christening of her son Prince Louis yesterday, she is officially on maternity leave until later this fall. Kate likely chose to attend today's events given the role that she plays in the RAF.

It's unclear when the next time we'll see Kate is, but she's quite the tennis fan, so an appearance at Wimbledon this week or next wouldn't be out of the question.
