January is usually a quiet time for the royal family, but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been busy over the past few weeks, each taking on a number of individual engagements here at the start of 2019. But today marks the royal couple's first joint working appearance of the year. Will and Kate are in Scotland this morning, where they're known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn, for the official opening of the V&A Dundee.

While in Dundee, Will and Kate will greet the public outside the museum, and the Countess will reportedly give a brief speech in her capacity as royal patron of the V&A.

For the day's events, Kate chose to wear a black watch plaid coat. She paired the look with a new handbag, which is reportedly by Manu Atelier, black tights, black gloves, and black shoes.

In March of last year it was announced that Kate would become the first ever royal patron of the V&A museum. It felt like a natural undertaking for Kate, who got her degree in art history from St. Andrews, and has a particular interest in both photography and fashion.

Since starting an official relationship with the organization, Kate has attended the opening of the V&A's new photography center at the London location.

This week will be a busy one for the royals. In addition to Will and Kate's trip today, Meghan and Harry have a full slate of engagements. Over the next few days, the Duchess of Sussex will be visiting the last two of her initial patronages: the National Theatre and the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and Harry will be meeting with Commonwealth youth at Lancaster House. On Friday, they will both spend the day in Bristol, where they'll visit the Old Vic, the oldest continually working theater in the U.K.
